About This Item

1837 1ed Missionary Narrative Williams TAHITI Pacific Islands MAP Polynesia

John Williams was a 19th-century English missionary to Polynesia who, in addition to his missionary journeys, is best-remembered for his narrative of those expeditions. First published in 1837,'A Narrative of Missionary Enterprises' describes Williams' 20 years of ministry in the South Pacific on the islands of Tahiti, Cook Islands, Samoa, and Society Islands. Williams' life ended in 1839 on Erromango, the New Hebrides, where he was killed and eaten by cannibals.

This 1837 first edition of Williams' 'Narrative' includes impressive illustrations and a double page map! It also features a hand-colored engraved image of Te po a Chief of Rarotonga.
