FILM 'A FABLE FOR FRIENDSHIP', WITH GROUP OF PAPERS; ANIMATED FILM PROJECT 1959] A FABLE FOR FRIENDSHIP, short animated film for UNESCO, 1959, with related letters on development, 2 copies of script, (A) attached to November 1959 letter TO Tor Gjesdal, Director, Mass Communications, UNESCO [see below for details], 5-pages of original ribbon continuity script-in-progress on carbon weight paper for scenes 12-94 with words for respective scenes, first page for scenes 1-11 missing…; (B) full continuity script scenes 1-94, mimeograph (purple text) 6-pages plus 4 pages inserted between different pages containing verse-like passages mostly handwritten and some typed to go with respective scenes in the continuity script-in-progress, passages written by Gerald Kean for the American audience for the film [see following re: letters], with the continuity scripts are two letters discussing the UNESCO film featuring Jiri Trnka animation, (1) stamped 29 Aout 1959 [August 29, 1959] on carbon copy-weight blue UNESCO stationery letter from Jean S. Bhownagary, Visual Media Division(UNESCO) hand-signed by him to Mr. A. Salsamendi, Acting Information Chief, New York Office, Subject: TRNKA FILM – "A Fable for Friendship", excerpts, "Gerald Kean did not require the commentary of the TRNKA film so much as the original script [of the scenes] from which the film was made so that he may know the film's intention in more detail…there was not much of a script to start with [hence Kean adding passages to bring out the film's message and in places present UNESCO as having produced the film]…", and mentions other items he is sending which may be helpful in completion of the film project…(2) 22 November 1959, 1-page original ribbon typed letter on carbon weight paper to Tor Gjesdal, Director, Mass Communications, UNESCO, in Paris, from Gerald Kean with black ink hand-written closing, "I look forward to your reaction, Cordially [no name, but Gerald Kean]", excerpts, "I am herewith dispatching the new commentary I have written for the American marketing of the Trnka film. The film presented several enormous problems which is one reason I have had to spend so much time on it…The American movie-goer has a vastly more sophisticated taste in animated pictures…This is partly due to TV commercials shot for this country in Paris, to the output of American firms by UPA, and to the import of Canadian and British cartoons…This version is a rough of that intention [to slant the film toward children], and I believe moderately successful…The verse approach immediately sets the mood…recommending…U. N. iprove upon a very weak sound and music track…",in upper right corner Kean note in black ink "cc: Mr. Gibson - Parker"; NOTES: JIRI TRNKA, 1912-69, Czech puppet-maker, illustrator, motion-picture animator, and film director…best known for his work in animation with puppets, which began in 1946…Because of his influence in animation, he was called 'the Walt Disney of Eastern Europe'.
