Following the conclusion of the Civil War, General Ulysses S. Grant was highly popular throughout the Union and the rest of the United States. Author Henry Deming wrote a popular biography of the life of Grant. While Grant's 'Memoirs' are considered the most iconic piece of literature on the war hero's life, Deming's biography is the best written prior to Grant's presidency. In fact, Deming's work was used as propaganda to help get Grant elected in the 1868 election.
