About This Item

New York: Wiley and Long, 1836. 30pp., stitched and gathered. Octavo self-titled wraps with stains, dust-soiling and small edge-losses to plain, unprinted rear wrap; about good. bjcb 352253

Signed in type at its conclusion as "Justitia" e.g., the author Albert Gallatin Hawes (1804-1849) who was a U.S. Representative from Kentucky. This copy was owned by West Point cadet William Henry "Bill" Fowler, Jr.  (1817-1901) -"U.S. Corps Cadet." According to family stories, Fowler, Jr. was the son of William Henry Fowler (1778-1865) and Rebecca Josephine ńee Kelsey Fowler Cook Grattan (1819-1971). Fowler, Jr. joined the Bartleson Party traveling to California and Oregon in 1841, later traveled with the Donner-Reed Party and was part of a third rescue attempt to help those survivors involved in the tragic events of the latter party's unenviable circumstances. He is buried in Dublin, California.
