About This Item
[Washington, D.C. 1952]. 12 x 9 inches. General wear; very good.
"Building a Better World Through Christian Missions." A large mid-twentieth century calendar documenting the 1951 pilgrimage to Africa by the Lott Carey Foreign Mission Convention.
Lott Carey (1780-1828), an enslaved man in Virginia, became the first American Baptist missionary to Africa. In 1897, African-American Baptists formed the Lott Carey Foreign Mission Convention for African missions.
This calendar features a large group photo portrait of Dr. Wendell C. Somerville and twenty-one other men and women who made the trip. At this time, the organization was headquartered at 1501 Eleventh Street, N.W., Washington, D.C.
A rare survival given the ephemeral nature of wall calendars.
