About This Item

Seattle, Washington: Printed by Lowman and Hanford [for] Alexander Peacock, 1936. First Edition. Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Near Fine/Good+. Photographs by Alexander Peacock. 8vo. Pp. [6], 7-276. Illustrated throughout with the author's black-and-white photography. Bound in kelly green cloth with an arch art-deco motif printed on a label mounted on the front board, black lettering stamped on spine. Former owner name (a fellow Seattle doctor) on front free endpaper. In the color illustrated dust jacket that has wear, closed tears and some soiling, but is generally presentable. Signed by the author on the front free endpaper. The Seattle physician sailed from San Francisco to Hawaii and the Far East, including China and Japan, before dropping down to the Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka ("Ceylon"), then the Near East, before transiting through European capitals and, finally, returning to San Francisco. There, "assuredly, will come again the urge to drop everything and follow the route of the gangplanks." His insights into 1930s Chinese culture, in both Shanghai and Peking, are worthy. The colorful dust jacket, with impressionistic art evoking Childe Hassam, coupled with art deco lettering, is quite cheery.
