About This Item

Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott. Very Good. 1889. Hardcover. Sanford M. Green (1807 - 1901) served in the Michigan Senate, was a member of the Michigan Supreme Court, and served as a Circuit court judge for many years. This treatise on crime provides a glimpse into the author's views on treatment of crime and criminals--which seem to be founded on principles of compassion for criminals as opposed to retribution. The author spent most of his life as a lawyer, politician and jurist and provides a wealth of information and ideas for reforming and refining attitudes toward crime and criminals. Frontis portrait opposite title page of the author which is protected by a tissue guard. Original brown cloth covers with gilt spine and cover lettering with a little shelf wear to the extremities. Both inner hinges are cracked (the front is worse than the rear). There is a private library stamp on the bottom of the title page under the publisher's name (J. M. VanSlyke, Madison, Wisconsin). Contains 14 pages of publisher's ads in the rear. Pages are clean and tight despite the cracked hinges, and this book can be read with care. Please inquire if you would like more information. ; Frontis Portrait; 8vo, 8"- 9" tall; 346 pages .
