About This Item

New York: Shamal Books, 1986. Perfect-bound, 5 3/8" x 8 1/8", in glossy pictorial wraps, 221 pp. Very good, lightly worn spine ends, wear and rubbing to corners and edges, lightly soiled wraps with large crease to rear and sticker residue to cover.. The memoir of James Yates published in 1986 by Shamal Books. Yates was born to sharecroppers in Quitman, MS in 1906 and left for Chicago at the age of 16 where his interest in labor politics was intensified through his involvement with organizing the Dining Car Waiters Union, a landmark in black trade union history. By 1935, he joined up with demonstrations against Mussolin's attack of Ethiopia which encouraged Yates to raise money and medical supplies to distribute in country during this time of conflict. Shortly after his anti-fascist views were fully catalyzed into his volunteering to overthrow Franco in Spain. He joined the Abraham Lincoln Brigade in which he fought for three years in the Spanish Civil War---the focus of this memoir---and then his continued political involvement through World War II and beyond.
