The Greenwich Total Abstinence Ribbon

  • Used
Ribbon. Very good.. 5.5 x 3 inches (14 x 7.5 cm), silk ribbon, slightly frayed at bottom and top, minor staining, picture of George Washington at a desk holding a quill pen. Picture of eagle at top. "The Greenwich Temperance Benevolent Societies." Area with bird has two streamers one says "Total" the other one says, "Abstinence." Below the eagle in small lettering is,"Pledged to abstain from all Intoxicating Drinks."

Benevolent societies proliferated in the U.S. between 1815 and 1861, melding religion and form. Presumably, this society is from Greenwich Connecticut.
