About This Item

Cologne and Frankfurt Germany, New York, N.Y. and Seattle, WA: Deutsche Lufthansa AG and Boeing Corp, 1985. Unbound. Near Fine to Fine.. All photos are 7" x 9" silver gelatin prints [without captions] on glossy paper with quarter-inch white borders, many with English and German stamps on verso. The majority are stamped: "Lufthansa Archive U.S.A. Reprint Permitted Copy Appreciated" and descriptions of the photo in both German and English or "Lufthansa Archiv Nachdruck gestaliet quellen ngabe und belegetemplar erbeten ["Reprints of sources and specimen templates are requested]."

This collection includes photos of well-dressed passengers enjoying first class and "Senator Class" services, pilots and flight attendants and a range of jets photographed in-flight, on approach and parked at gates. This grouping recalls the apex of mid-century international air travel.

The new Lufthansa Company began flight operations on April, 1, 1955. The jet age arrived for Lufthansa in 1960 with the arrival of the Boeing 707. In the 1960s, jet aircraft changed the world of civil aviation and of Lufthansa. Throughout the decade, the corporation carried twice as many passengers as propeller aircraft and reached their destinations in half the time. At first, jets dominated long-range services, and then quickly conquered medium- and short-range routes as well. During the third decade of Lufthansa's activities there was a significant increase in business from other international customers.
