About This Item

Important catalog of works from 1960-61 by distinguished Polish artist and representative of both the pre- and post-war avant-gardes, Henryk Stażewski (1894-1988). A student of Kazimir Malevich, Stażewski was best known as a painter and for his association with all major tendencies, from expressionism and the Formists, to the "Blok" group, and finally Praesens. He also served as editor of the avant-garde journal "Praesens" (1926-1930) and was a champion of so-called elementary (or functional) typography, for which he has received "relatively little recognition." After the war, he continued to practice as an artist, while also patronizing the work of the Polish neo-avant-garde. Piotr Rypson writes: "Stażewski specialized in clear, ascetic compositions, models for which (if we consider the analogies with abstract painting) can be found in his own geometrical paintings and the works of Piet Mondrian, for whose book Stażewski designed a cover" (see Rypson, Books and Pages, pp. 73-74).

One of 500 copies, this copy signed and inscribed by the artist ("To Beloved Mary... what is on (my) heart H. Stażewski").

As of January 2024, KVK, OCLC locate three copies in North America, at MoMA, Yale, and Wisconsin.
