About This Item
Complete run of this bibliophile periodical with contributions by Karel VotlucÌka, Josef Váchal, Leo Brož, Koro Otei, Anna Macková, Emmerich Alois HruÅ¡ka, and others. Edited by a relatively unknown Czech writer, artist, publisher, and cabaret artist who was a student of the famous woodcut illustrator and artist Josef Váchal. HruÅ¡ka (1895-1957) was a prolific, yet marginal figure in Czech culture of the 1920-30s, who published countless books, often with his own typographic design and illustrations, and often with the intent to shock the public through ventures into eroticism, the grotesque, the occult, and science fiction.
The present journal presents reviews and updates of recent and upcoming bibliophile publications, poems and prose about book auctions and Czech book history, as well as parts of an early version of Váchal's "Krvavý román", a study and list of nineteenth century Czech penny dreadfuls (which he followed up with his own attempt at the genre).
The wrappers are original linocut prints by Brož, Váchal, and VotlucÌka respectively, who also provided vignettes for the issues.
Each issue is numbered and one of 222 copies printed.
