Komi-Permyak is the native Finno-Ugric language of the Permyaks, a group of Komi from the Perm' Region, also known as the Southern Komi (as distint from the Northern Komi known as Zyrians). The book was published during the brief period of 1929 to 1933 when Cyrillic, which had been accepted since the nineteenth century, was replaced by the Latin alphabet.

The Bolsheviks initially promoted Komi culture, but it was severaly impacted by the combined force of industrialization and the anti-nationalist purges of the Stalinist period. The Komi lands were also the site of many forced labor camps and saw a great influx of political prisoners, further changing the demographics of the region.
