About This Item

A collection of bound correspondence, drafts, drawings, and other documentation (in xerox copies) with participants of the international art festival "Konstrukcja w procesie" (Construction in process), held in Łódź in 1981. The festival, and its resulting publication, FABRYKA, included works by major contemporary international artists, such as Sol Lewitt, Richard Nonas, Les Levine, Lawrence Weiner, and Paul Sharits. Curated by the artist and critic Ryszard Waśko (born 1947), the exhibit's core was held at the Budrem factory, where artists used the factory floor to make, exhibit, and stage their art. The festival was supported by the local branch of the Solidarity trade union, connecting art with political dissent, with the festival using the Solidarnośċ font for their posters. It enabled a curious meeting of conceptual artists from the capitalist West and Polish artists living behind the "Iron Curtain." Ryszard Waśko, an artist and former member of the famous Film Form Workshop curated the festival, and sent out invitations to international artists. This compilation of letters responding to Waśko's invitation include letters from artists such as Les Levine, Jan Dibbets, Taka Limura, Richard Long, Dora Maurer, Ed Ruscha, Fred Sandback, Dennis Oppenheim, Nancy Holt, Peter Lowe, among many others.

We cannot trace any other copies of this documentation of artist proposals sent in response to the invitation to participate. The leaf with the participants features the stamp of "Archive Small Press Communication" / Archive for Small Press & Communication (ASPC) in xerox, pointing to the possible involvement of Guy Schraenen in compiling and disseminating this volume, although the binding and Polish spine label suggest a Łódź-based production. The Solidarity movement, which actively supported the festival, also had access to good quality printing technology.
