About This Item

San Francisco: The Bomb Hip-Hop Magazine, 1992. First Edition. Well-preserved issue of this Bay Area fanzine, one which played a critical role in shaping the West Coast hip-hop scene. Founded by Bay Area DJ David Paul in 1991, The Bomb was published during a time when there were very few magazines dedicated solely to hip-hop (The Source, One Nut Network, Flava). The magazine focuessed on the four elements of hip-hop at a local, national, and international level, featuring articles by Funken-Klein, Billy Jam, Spence Dookey, Cheo Coker, Faisal Ahmed, DJ Shadow, Kutmasta Kurt and others. Contents feature interviews with Chubb Rock, NWA's MC Ren, Double XX Posse, and the Beastie Boys, with articles about the Bay Area scene, photos of graffiti murals, and album reviews of Mobb Deep, Public Enemy, The Pharcyde, and others. Cover art by Scape One. Circulation was limited to 3,000-5,000 copies per issue. OCLC finds scattered issues at 7 institutions (Cornell, NYPL, SFPL, UC Berkeley, Berklee Col. of Music, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and Wisconsin Historical). Quarto (28cm); black and white sheets, offset printed on recto and verso and stapled at upper left corner; [5], 21pp; illus. Light wear to extremities, with some oxidation to staple; Very Good+.
