Fairfield WA: Ye Galleon Press, 1967. First Thus. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo. Pp. [xii,] 166, 143-161. Illustrated with engravings and document facsimiles. With Meany's "Later Life of John R. Jewitt." Beige cloth, titles and illustration stamped in gilt on the spine, illustration stamped in gilt on the cover, illustrated endpapers, title page in red and black. Hand numbered 10 of an edition of 1522. Errata pasted to the final page of the introduction. Light stains to back cover, spine ends gently pushed, cut edges a trifle age toned. Publisher Glen Adams' introduction with facsimile of the c. 1815 edition, written by Alsop based on interviews with Jewitt and his 1807 Journal. For a thorough explication of the transcription of Jewitt's journal into the narrative, artfully constructed by Richard Alsop, please see "Richard Alsop 'A Hartford Wit'" by Karl P. Harrington (Middletown, CT: Mattabesett Press, 1939).

Middletown, CT: Seth Richards, 1815. Second Edition. 12mo (18cm). Contemporary full marbled sheep, titled in gilt on spine; plain endpapers; 204pp; wood-engraved frontispiece. Ownership inscriptions to front pastedown. Sound, externally rubbed with minor wear, internally rubbed and foxed, with horizontal tears to three early leaves, frontispiece and title page somewhat tattered and chipped, loss to frontispiece affecting image, but complete and Good. Jewitt spent two and a half years as the captive of the Nuu-chah-nulth (Nootka) people in what is now British Columbia from 1803-1805. His memoir, now a valuable account of Nuu-chah-nulth culture, went into several editions. In 1815 it was also published in New York, and in Middletown under the imprint of Loomis & Richards. 12 mo, publisher cloth backed boards, illustrated with wood engravings, some in color (probably by early owner) 166 pp. Boards are worn and soiled with some chipping at edges, and some fading to title wording. Early owner signatures to preliminaries. Also, some light foxing and a few chips to edges of a couple of pages, but not affecting text The present work appears to be a reworking of a journal published by Jewitt in Boston in 1807. At least two editions were published of this book in 1815, one in Connecticut and the present volume, which was published in New York. Despite the fact that this work was published in numerous editions, Alsop felt he didn't really do Jewitt any real good, because he seemed to be reduced to a vagabond like existence marching around the country hawking his book (Field). According to Streeter Jewitt was the first white man to live with the Indians in Nootka Sound, and the work presents an excellent account of his adventures.
