Times obituary reads: "APPLETON--William W., son of William Henry Appleton and Emily Noel Johnston, died of cardiac arrest on June 7th, 2014 in Manhattan. Born on December 31, 1915 paternally related to a distinguished publishing family and maternally the great-grandson of the founder of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, he was educated at St. Bernard's, St. Mark's and Harvard '38. In 1940 he received an MA, in English Literature from Columbia.
