Born on December 31, 1915 paternally related to a distinguished publishing family and maternally the great-grandson of the founder of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, he was educated at St. Bernard's, St. Mark's and Harvard '38. In 1940 he received an MA, in English Literature from Columbia.
