Some sunning / edge wear. 90pp illustrated in colour throughout. Undated circa late1930s. Occasional marks, but generally nice and clean inside. Sambo saves his siblings from the wicked monkeys with the help of an eagle. Charming original illustrations by Bannerman. When first published Bannerman’s books, about Sambo, his family and friends, were praised by some as a rare positive portrayal of a black / asian hero in childrens’ fiction. However, the naming of the characters and some of the illustrations (usually the USA/ Japanese editions) are considered offensive to some. The stories are based on her time in India and the stories reflect Indian / Tamil culture.

Chicago: The Reilly & Lee Co., 1908 56 numbered pp +2; HB. From the Children's Red Books series, includes both Little Black Sambo and the Story of Topsy. Filled with John R. Neill's magical illustrations that are by today's standards certainly not PC. Pages: clean, bright, tight, decorative color eps, color frontis; .one page has 2" tear, some others have tiny edge tears, occasional foxing, period gift inscription to sfep. Cover: red paper over boards, color artwork + white titles front; substantial shelfwear, extrems well worn, paper covering spine and adjacent are of boards is lost, with portions of text gone as well and crash showing through. Internals very nice, boards not so much. Scarce.
