Early ownership signature of A. W. Kerchasel, Romney, Va., Sept. 22nd 1847. First published in 1826 and again in 1829; it was still in print as late as 1854 in London. Brown leather boards have rubbing to the edges and corners- front board joint has rubbed through at the bottom two inches creating a thin split, spine leather is a bit dehydrated with shallow cracks in the leather. Has a good binding, no marks or notations. Top 1/4 of the title page has been removed- rear end page removed. [iv], 714 pages. 5.25" x 4.25" x 2".

Hardcover. 4to. 27cm, un-paginated (over 1,000 pp.), triple-column, in contemporary tree calf boards rebacked in on laid brown fabrikoid, original crimson morocco label replaced, inner linen hinges, armorial bookplate, very good (Lgc). Italian art critic, Joseph Baretti (1719-1789) based his dictionary on Delino's Spanish and English Dictionary which he credits as the first edition. A friend and colleague of Samuel Johnson, Baretti drew on Johnson's Dictionary for much of the English part. "He can with truth that he has added little less than ten thousand words, and made many erasures." (Author's preface).

Old ownership marks from O'Donovans to title with a long inscription dated 1921 conveying the book from Richard O'Donovan to Luis Barreiro.Note that the old endpapers were removed. Further ownership makrs on first page of advertisement and the first text page. Title chipped and repaired, last page of ads worn, scattered foxing (heavier at start and end), but very clean otherwise. Though styled the Second Edition because of Baretti's debt to Giral Delpino's 1763 work, this is the first of the Baretti and substantially different from earlier works (including a great number of words added from Baretti's friend Samuel Johnson's dictionary). 2 parts in one volume, unpaginated. Londres: Piestre and Delamolliere, 1786. 2 volumes, 4to, pp. [6], 624; [4], 491; slight cracking of the joints, wear at spine ends and corners, but all in all a good, handsome set in contemporary mottled (French or Spanish) calf, gilt spines, red morocco labels. Baretti's edition was first published in 1778 although he called it "second edition" as he considered the dictionary of Giral Delpino, published in 1763, the first edition, since he had drawn so heavily upon it. Even so, "Baretti deleted twice as many vocabulary entries as he added to Giral Delpino's dictionary and did extensive editing." He also drew heavily on the dictionary of his friend, Dr. Samuel Johnson, and he introduced "thousands of vocabulary entries" from Johnson into this work.
