New York: Collins & Co.. Hardcover. Fair/No Jacket. 1828-1829. Three text volumes ONLY and LACKING the PLATE VOLUME. Volume I is in modern library type of binding (though with no library markings). Volumes II and III remain in contemporary bindings, though spines are darkened, chipped, and brittle and appear to have been exposed to smoke and/or heat. There is no smoky odor however. All volumes show moderate to heaving foxing, though all text remains clear and legible. Covers of II and III are loosened and/or detached but present.

Bookplates of former owner in front pastedowns of each volume. Name of another prior owner in each volume. A handsome set. This is the first European edition of Wilson's American Birds. Originally published in America in 9 vols in quarto. The first three volumes are arranged to be accessible to the general reader and the ornithologist. Volume 1 is prefixed by a biographical memoir by Mr. Hetherington. The fourth volume contains the American Ornithology of Prince Charles Lucian Bonaparte. Besides the frontispieces, these works do not reproduce any of the plates from the original.

Half red morocco with marbled boards, title gilt-lettered on spines with gilt embellishments. Bindings professionally restored with all volumes rehinged plus corners and spine ends repaired, Volume I rebacked with original spine laid down. Twenty-seven hand-colored engravings by Alexander Lawson with tissue covers, some toning and an occasional finger mark but colors bright, chipped edges of plate 25 repaired with tissue. As usual with this set, some offsetting of plates to text as well as toning and foxing which is light in Volume I, but more moderate in Volumes II, III and IV.
