'Mostly In Clover' was a sensitive portrait of a young boy growing up in rural Ontario during the 1920's. 'Homebrew and Patches' follow the same boy as he moves from the farm to the comparative sophistication of the continuation school in the nearby small town. For the boy, the growing-up process was complicated by the Great Depression, which brought the "Hungry Thirties" to the farming communities. Mr. Boyle has come to the conclusion that the misery of this time was very much mitigated by the amusing incidents which brightened life on the farm. Book is in very good condition. Has owners name on fly leaf and a small scribble on top inside dust jacket. Dust jacket is in fair condition with wear and tears on top and bottom. This book won the Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour as the best book of its kind published in 1963.

It is a story about the Depression but recounts the normal events that happened in his life in a humourous manner, overshadowing the difficulties of The Thirties.

Presumed First. 9 1/2 x 6 1/4. 173 pp. A book to follow Harry Boyle's first, Mostly in Clover, that portrays a young boy growing up in rural Ontario during the 1920s. This book, Homebrew an d Patches, follows this same boy as he goes from the farm to a continuation school in a small town. This was the time of the Great Depression but good times were not lost and growing up was full of in teresting incidents. DJ has some edgewear and a bit of scuffing to front edge, a small 1/2" tear along bottom edge and a tiny chip from spine. Not price clipped. New mylar cover. Rust coloured cloth o n boards binding has small bumps to top corners and is very nice and clean. Gift inscription to former owner on front free endpaper. Text is clean, secure and unmarked.
