Description:
Washington: Gales & Seaton, 1845. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. Senate issue. 693 pp, with 22 engraved plates, the large folding map (bound in), two single-page maps, and one of two small folding maps. The second small folding map (untitled map showing the crossing of the Sierra Nevada by the South Fork of the American River) is supplied in photo-facsimile. Some of the plates are trimmed quite close to the margins. In a later nineteenth century binding of three-quarter navy blue leather over patterened paper-covered boards. Fremont's most important work, chronicling his seminal expeditions that revealed the paths and trails that would become the highways over which the gold seekers would rush to California beginning in 1849. Wheat (Transmississippi Vol. II, pp 194-200, map 497) comments that the large map "radically and permanently changed the entire picture of the West and its cartography." Graff 1436; Howes F-370; Sabin 25845; Wagner-Camp 115:1; Zamorano 80 #39.
