Octavo; cloth a little flecked, rubbed and bumped; frontispieces and title-pages offset (due to the high acid content of the tissue-guards), endpapers less so; two endpapers nibbled at the top edge with minor loss; first volume slightly cracked at the inner hinge (but sound); a very good set (uniform with Carlyle's complete works). With an interesting photograph of a drawing of Blanche Stanley, Countess of Airlie, laid down on the front pastedown, and with her signed gift inscription 'to her friend Ida Hankey', dated 26 September 1919. The Countess was a correspondent of Carlyle's.

Volume II: 507 pp., spine label rubbed off, Volume III: 496 pp., spine label rubbed but legible, Volume IV: 501 pp., wear to spine label, Volume V: 386 pp. including index, spine label rubbed off, some fading to boards. All books appear to have been little-read, usual library markings, very good condition..

Cambridge University prize binding with heraldic device to the front boards and spine. Slight sunning to the spine and wear to the extremities. Minor marks to the some of the boards. Binding firm and internally fresh and bright, each volume illustrated with two black and white plates. No ownership marks. This is a heavy set and may require additional postage if being shipped outside of Europe. . Very Good. Full Calf - Prize Binding. 1899.
