This is an excellent, well-researched study of early Bolshevik drama. Good photos. Especially noteworthy are some haunting portraits of key actors and directors. We would be remiss if we didn't point out Carter's entertaining preface, which is full of self-congratulation in this vein: "Only writers who, like myself, have entered Russia from time to time since 1917 and have systematically collected material for books on the theatre as a whole, can boast of being in a position to tell the complete story of the New theatre. The number of such writers is very limited. Probably there is only one -- myself."
