Philadelphia: Mathew Carey, 1802. Hardcover. Very Good. Early American edition, small 8vo, 7 x 4.25 inches, original publisher's marbled paper-covered boards, leather spine neatly covered with matching cloth, probably recent, contents very good with early owner signature of a Mrs. Wm. Horton on flyleaf, signed again and dated 1818 at the top margin of one of the two frontispiece engraved plates of carving viands, text shows light tide mark from old waterstaining, but very lightly and not that evident; pages are darkened or tanned. (17) 14-132 pp., with two engravings plus woodcut of table place settings, includes 8 pages on wine making. See Lincoln-Lowenstein, 30 and 34. The first American edition of this book appeared in 1772 and the two plates were engraved by Paul Revere for that edition; it looks substantially the same as our edition and it would be a point of curiosity to find out whether the Revere plates were used for the production of this volume.
