Contemporary tan full calf by BICKERS & SON, with raised bands, gilt titles to contrasting red and green labels, and further gilt tooling to spine. All edges and endpapers marbled. Illustrated bookplate to flyleaf. A little toning and spotting to first and final leaves. Lower half of upper hinge and joint split, with an archival tape repair to hinge. Moderate wear to spine and extremities. Very good. The classic children's tale, first published in 1863.

Matching grey endpapers with red decoration. With the grey illustrated dust-jacket. Heavy spotting to edges and preliminaries. Occasional creases to leaves. Spotting to spine, and a few light marks and bumps to boards. Heavy rubbing, chipping and creasing to price-clipped jacket, with some large closed tears. Rare with the jacket. Very good. One of the American artist's best-regarded sets of illustrations, first published in 1916.

Kingsley had second thoughts about this while the book was being printed, and he had the leaf removed, but not before a few hundred copies of the book had already been printed (Gottlieb, Early Children's Books and Their Illustration, 113). Very good copy in a fine period binding - Professionally and sympathetically rebacked with the spine laid back. Spine bands and panel edges slightly dust-toned and rubbed as with age.
