Nuno Beltran de Guzman ranks second only to Hernan Cortes in importance in the early conquest of New Spain. This is the first biography of a very important figure in the early history of Spanish colonization, and it corrects misconceptions about Guzman fostered by earlier writers including Bancroft. In particular, Chipman shows that Guzman more vigorously protected the natives than previously assumed.
