Rebound, folding map mostly detached in rear of first volume, one section remains attached, book plate, normal aging and browning; otherwise very good in a very attractive modern binding. Charles M. Doughty (1843-1826) was an explorer, travel writer, and poet. Doughty spent some time studying literature, and learning the Dutch language after graduating from Caius College, Cambridge in 1866. In the mod 1870s he headed for Arabia with Medain Salith being his objective. He was refused travel papers, but disguised himself as a Syrian who sold medicines and took the trip anyway. In Travels in Arabia Deserta, first published in 1888, Doughty records places and events he saw along the way, including the reactions of the locals to him. He was sent to prison for a few months by a Turkish commandant, and had a couple of other near escapes, including one from a riot in Buraydah. In… Read More
