Signed on the front free endpaper: "My best wishes. Ed Muskie." Edmund Muskie (1914-1996) served as the 58th Secretary of State under President Jimmy Carter. Earlier in his career he represented the state of Maine, as Governor from 1955-1959 and United States Senator from 1959-1980. He ran for Vice President of the United States in 1968 alongside Hubert Humphrey. Muskie died in 1996.
