Bks #53-one of the best accounts of Texas on the eve of the revolutions, this also includes the early actions in revolt through 1835. One of the few choice early histories of Texas altho the author was clearly anti-Texan at heart.. Quarter Leather & Buckram. Fine.

Bound in original full leather, scuffed and with wear to the corners and spine ends, water stain on pages throughout, pages wavey, binding solid, no names or page markings, binding tight, spine gilt still very readable. Howe's E-48. .

Original cloth, paper label on the spine with titles in black, xii, 13 - 336 pp., preface, appendix. Raines' Bibliography of Texas page 74 says: "One of the few choice early histories of Texas, though the author was rather Mexican in his politics. Among the rare public documents inserted, are the proposed constitution of Texas drawn up in the convention of 1832-33, and the Mexican constitution of 1824. Specifically valuable for full treatment of the times just before the Revolution." Howes E 48: "Conditions just prior to the Revolution described by an actual observer." This copy lacks the elusive map, which has been usual for us in handling previous copies, foxed throughout, cloth is light worn at the spine ends, else a good, tight and serviceable copy of an scarce book. We have never handled a copy with the map present.

Original muslin cloth with remnant of printed paper spine label with couple of contemporary owner's name and initials. Expected wear to original boards of this age with rubbing, some loss along the spine and chipping to the spine label along, with dampstain and small crease to title page, and scattered foxing, still a sound and presentable good copy. "Conditions just prior to the Revolution described by an actual observer" (*Howes* 48). Apparently this copy made the rounds: one of the owner's inscriptions is particularly interesting: "Samuel Haggard pd. on[e] dollar." Squire Haggard, the son of Samuel Haggard of Bedford County, Tennessee, served in the Army of the Republic of Texas in 1836 and 1837 during its war for independence with Mexico. Some dampstaining to inner gutter in first part of the book, else very good. Folding map in nice condition.
