Description:
ELIOT, George, pseud. [EVANS, Mary Ann]. Silas Marner: The Weaver of Raveloe. 8vo, original crimson cloth (lightly soiled; spine extremities strengthened, corners little rubbed, a few slits at the joints & front end paper slightly cracked at fold), pp. 364, [4], 16 ads. Edinburgh and London: William Blackwood ad Sons, 1861.

First Edition. Despite the binding faults noted above, this is quite a decent copy of a classic novel many of us read in school, nowhere near as bad as we have suggested. Eliot's opening sentence sets the tone: "In the days when the spinning-wheels hummed busily in the farmhouses-and even great ladies, clothed in silk and thread-lace, had their toy spinning-wheels of polished oak-there might be seen, in districts far away among the lanes, or deep in the bosom of the hills certain pallid undersized men, who, by the side of the country-folk, look like the remnants of a disinherited race." Description:
London: William Blackwood and Sons, 1861. [English Literature]. FIRST EDITION. Octavo (21 x 14cm), pp.[4 of publisher's advertisements]; [6]; 364; [16 of publisher's advertisements]. Publisher's brown cloth with gilt titles to spine and blind decoration to boards. All edges untrimmed. Armorial bookplate of Alfred Gilbey to front pastedown, neat ownership above. Textblock marginally toned, front hinge starting. Cloth rubbed to spine ends, and corners, a few small marks to boards, some wrinkling to the slightly darkened spine, bottom slightly compacted. A nice clean copy in the original binding. Very good. The classic tale of a misanthropic miser, warped by heartbreak and betrayal, whose character is redeemed by the chance adoption of an orphaned girl.
