A pioneering venture into, then, uncharted territory. was an English physician, writer, progressive intellectual and social reformer who studied human sexuality. He co-wrote the first medical textbook in English on homosexuality in 1897, and also published works on a variety of sexual practices and inclinations, as well as on transgender psychology. He is credited with introducing the notions of narcissism and autoeroticism, later adopted by psychoanalysis. He was also, unfortunately, a supporter of eugenics.

Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1929 Still a fairly tight book, clean and devoid of marks or inscriptions. Page edges now cut , however must have been uncut at one time as some cuts are rough edged. This does not affect any textual content. Solid blue cloth boards with gilt title on spine. DJ is complete but top edges are chipped and front fold has 2" split. A small slightly faded patch on the front due to a water spillage at some point.

The 5th and, I think, final edition of this influential work which was first published in 1896 (with 409 main text pp.), the successive editions documenting the evolution of Ellis's position away from orthodox sexual stereotyping.
