In 1939, following the German invasion of Poland, Frank was appointed "Generalgouverneur fĂĽr die besetzten polnischen Gebiete" (Governor-General of the occupied Polish territories). He oversaw the segregation of the Jews into ghettos and the use of Polish civilians as forced and compulsory labor. After being captured by American troops in 1945 he was indicted for war crimes and tried before the International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg. Frank voluntarily surrendered his personal diaries to the Allies which were used against him as evidence of his guilt.
