Hardcover. 8vo, 21.5cm, first US edition, (Scottish sheets), vii,254p., in full contemporary brown calf, gilt decorated raised bands, full gilt borders and decorations in the panels, crushed black morocco label, gilt titles, gilt ruled border on the boards, marbled endpapers and edges, some fading in the panel decorations, some peeling on the boards, but a very good sound attractively bound copy (Irlthmds). ~ Thomas Parnell (11 September 1679 24 October 1718) was an Anglo Irish poet and clergyman who was a friend of both Alexander Pope and Jonathan Swift. Includes Samuel Johnson, Thomas Gray & Tobias Smollett with short biographies of each. ~ George Gilfillan (30 January 1813 13 August 1878) was a Scottish author and poet. One of the spasmodic poets, Gilfillan was also an editor and commentator, with memoirs, critical dissertations in many editions of earlier British poetry.
