Description:
Mannheim, 1805. First Edition, Thus . Half Leather - Hardbound. Good/No Dust Jacket. Later edition of Karl von Linne's "Systema Naturae (A General System of Nature)" first published in 1735. This edition is edited, and with some additional content, by Carl Christian Gmelin (1762 - 1837; A German botanist, and brother to engraver Wilhelm Friedrich Gmelin (1760 - 1820). Pp: [i-v] vi - xiii [9] 1-186 + 27 fold out plates. Each hand-colored steel engraving is leaf sized and tipped to a blank bound leaf, then folded in. Rebacked with newer leather over spine and corners. Earlier green cloth over boards and original spine labels affixed. Ex-Library with small markings on paste downs, and numbers on blank verso of title page. Green cloth is a bit rubbed and soiled. Scattered light foxing, though only minimally affecting plates. A few plates show bend corners, not affecting images. Volume remains tight and plates are generally bright and clean.
