First edition of this memoir of the first major American attempt to reach the North Pole, which resulted in tragedy, murder, and abandonment both of crew and ship as the expedition continued. The narrative of the Polaris Expedition to reach the North Pole in 1871-73, to explore the regions north of Smith Sound, and to make scientific observations.
