Mild shelf wear, cloth a bit soiled, mildly sunned spine panel, but overall quite presentable, with gilt edges remaining bright. Approx. 2" closed tear to cloth extending along upper rear joint has been mended, and the cloth is a bit puckered as a result. viii,516 pp., illus. w/ 31 "highly finished portraits on steel," each with its own tissue guard. Previous owners inscription to head of ffep, overall pp are very clean and binding is tight. some minor discolouration to gilt edges of text block else a clean and tidy copy.. Half Leather. London: Virtue & Co, 1883. Early printing. Leather bound. Good. 516pp. Quarto [28 cm] 3/4 black leather with brown pebbled cloth over boards, and raised bands. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Frontispiece illustration of the bust of Queen Victoria. The extremities are rubbed, and there is a thin loss from the leather at the head of the backstrip. The hinges are broken and the text block is coming away from the boards. The text block is also cracked a number of times, and several of the gatherings are a bit loose. There is a contemporary gift inscription on the front flyleaf. All plates are present. Illustrated by Thirty-One Highly-Finished Portraits on Steel. Lovely illustrations accompanied with engaging, yet simple text.
