Description:
Simon & Schuster, 1950 Book. Fair. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 231 pages, blue cloth, deckled fore and lower edges. Lower corner exposed to flame- likely a cigarette burn: heel of the spine and lower rear board has an inch by half inch cloth burnt away exposing the inner workings at the juncture of the board and spine. Dust jacket missing approximately and inch by two inches segment at the same location affecting the first two letters of the author's name. Otherwise, minor wear to the edges and corners, minor loss at the head of the spine. Toning on the paste downs, one page with creasing along the fore edge. Publishers' postcard requesting responses about this book laid-in. Still an attractive copy in protective Brodart..

Description:
New York:: Simon & Schuster,, (1950.). First edition -. Very good overall - the usual toning to the pages, some minor wear to the covers. . First printing, a trade paperback, issued simultaneously with hardcover. The first of the 'Simple' books which began as a series of columns in the Chicago Defender during World War II, columns which were, according to Hughes, based on actual conversations Hughes heard or overheard, the ordinary working man of Harlem discussing everything from World War II to love, usually in terms of race -and with the humor embodied in the blues line 'I'm laughing to keep from crying.' This is the Simon and Schuster's Readers Edition, which they describe as an experiment in publishing - it is a new book, issued at just $1 because it has thinner paper, a soft cover binding and a large printing, although they note that the hardcover is available at $3.00. 231 pp. plus 1 pp about the author.

Description:
New York: Simon & Schuster, (1950). First edition. Bookplate. Publisher's binding with tape shadow to spine. Very good in a fair illustrated dust jacket with library label to spine and inexpert internal tape mends. First edition of this first collection of the "Simple" short stories written about the everyday lives of Harlemites. Given by Hughes, in the year of publication, to his dentist, another Harlemite: "Inscribed especially for my friends, the Tom Johnsons, with continued good wishes - Sincerely, Langston. New York, April 10, 1950." According to census records, between the 1920s and 1930s, Thomas O. Johnson (b. 1894) and Anna Johnson (b. 1892) lived and worked at 207 West 138th Street. (Hughes had also lived on West 138th Street.) The Johnsons lived with their son, Thomas Jr., and Junior's grandfather, McPherson Johnson, and his great-grandmother, "Sabanah" (likely Savannah) Johnson (b. 1849). Both senior family members migrated north from Georgia. "I live in the heart of Harlem. I have also…

Description:
New York: Simon and Schuster, 1950. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First edition. Fine in just about fine dust jacket, housed in a custom cloth slipcase. Inscribed by Hughes with a full-page inscription: "For Helen Buttenweiser, a woman possessed of unusually broad social vision and a real interest in people - this gift from Hubert Delany, Sincerely, Langston Hughes. New York, November, 1951." Helen Buttenweiser was an American lawyer, philanthropist, and later legal counsel to Alger Hiss. Her legal work focused on aiding women and children, and preserving civil liberties. She was active in the Legal Defense Fund of the NAACP. The book was apparently a gift to her from Hubert Delany, American Civil Rights pioneer, lawyer, politician, and judge. A handsome and meaningful full-page inscription.
