Large thick 8vo, modern 3/4 calf, marbled paper-covered boards, gilt ruling, raised bands with florets in the compartments, red and black title labels, marbled endsheets. Very Good: binding tight and square, bookseller notes in pencil on the ffep, small area of loss to the title page neatly mended and backed, light foxing throughout but not distracting. Includes wood engravings by T. Bewick without attribution. A rather attractive copy.

First edition, 4to, pp. xxvii, 646, [2] errata; engraved headpiece at head of dedication, 1 engraved plate, numerous woodcut diagrams and mathematical equations in the text; the fine Macclesfield copy in contemporary tree calf, gilt decorated spine in 6 compartments, red morocco label in one, edges stained yellow; engraved bookplates of Gen. G. L. Parker (a subscriber), and the South Library, Earls of Macclesfield, and with 2 small pressure stamps on preliminaries. In a new black cloth clamshell box. The illustrations are thought to be by Thomas Bewick and Ralph Beilby. Bewick, who worked as an apprentice of Ralph Beilby of Newcastle (who was a subscriber to the present work), and so these may be among his earliest published designs.
