A Near Fine set in Very Good dust jackets. 8vo., each volume approximately 650 pages. Bound in very dark grey with gilt tites on the spines, in tan, printed dust jackets. The dust jackets, all originally priced at $10.00 each, have very light shelf wear, and toned spines, with the exception of volume 8, which has insect damage along the rear joint, causing fine pine-holing. All dust jackets now protected in a mylar sleeve. The index is Very Good, bound in grey wraps, with black lettering, spine and wrappers toning along the edges. Charlottesville, VA: F. Carr, and Co, 1829. Hard Cover. Good binding. Octavo. viii, [2], 466 pp. First edition. In publisher's cloth-backed boards with printed paper label. Binding toned and soiled; label is rubbed and somewhat darkened; some closed tears to the cloth of the spine; lacking rear free endpaper; contemporary owner presentation inscription on the half title; foxing throughout as usual. The first collection of Jefferson's writings, edited and published by Jefferson's grandson and executor Thomas Jefferson Randolph a few years after Jefferson's death. Randolph sold Monticello after his grandfather's death, and went on to become the Rector of the University of Virginia. A London edition and subsequent American edition followed shortly after this first edition. The Charlottesville edition remains quite scarce, particularly in publisher's boards.
