Very good in early nineteenth century red straight-grained morocco framed in gilt and with blindstamped foliage borders, raised bands, gilt scrollwork and lettering in compartments, all edges gilt, dentelle turn ins, some wear and bumping to edges and scuffs to leather, some spotting and foxing near margins.. First Edition of Smith's, who served as Keeper of Drawings at the British Museum, collection of plates depicting architectural views and monuments in London. Despite the book's title, Smith takes a rather broad view of "antiquity," even including an engraving of Hogarth's tomb, who died only decades prior to publication of the book. Large 4to. Engraved titlepage, 96 engraved plates (3 with borders and accents tinted in reddish-brown). ESTC T100005.

Description:
Collection of 96 engraved plates by Smith after original drawings by members of the Society of Antiquaries. Engraved title-page and 96 plates, of which 3 tinted (One duplicated plate bound in.) Plates include portraits of King Lud, King Richard II, King James I, Sir Thomas Gresham, William Earl of Craven, historian John Stowe, famous London buildings such as Bruce Castle, Sion College, Lincoln's Inn Gate, Bloody Tower, Newgate, Savoy Prison, Lollards Prison, old Tudor houses, ruins, gravestones, etc. The engraver John Thomas Smith was Keeper of Drawings at the British Museum, and this series of prints earned him the nickname Antiquity Smith.Condition: Leather spine with five-raised bands and gilt lettering, marble boards, scuffed and worn. Engraved plates mostly clean and bright with slight spotting and foxing to a few. Damp stain to lower edge of first 15 plates outside the plate area.

Engraved title and 96 plates [94 engraved of which no.73 is printed in bistre and 2 lithographed tinted plates] PLUS a sheet at the end with Directions to Binder. Later half calf and marbled boards, newly rebacked, uncut, title foxed and plates with marginal foxing more especially at the ends, plate 38 with a small ink blot in the fore-edge margin, plate 40 bound in upside down, the plates neatly numbered in pencil in an early hand, overall a good copy.
