Description:
Paternoster Row, London: Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown & Green , 1826. First edition. Illustrated with 60 hand-coloured plates (of which one is double-page), each with two pages of description, all edges gilt, octavo, in an unusual decorated calf binding, possibly late Victorian or early twentieth century, rather worn and marked but still very sound, later re-backed with a new morocco spine, the remains of the original spine laid down, endpapers retained but the free endpapers have been thickened and strengthened, new blank pages at front and rear. The plates are very fine, they are magnificently coloured and have great depth and luminosity, particularly in the foliage which is finely observed. Plate 1 is slightly age-toned, and eight others have the slightest of marks - these are really very very tiny. One of the most desirable of all nineteenth century colour plate books. RARE. [Little seems to be known of Richard Morris, who was a surveyor and landscape designer and flourished in the… Read More

Description:
London: Thomas Griffiths, 1830. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo. An attractive copy in a contemporary half morocco binding lettered and attractively decorated in gilt on spine. Marbled end-papers. Gift inscription on front end-paper. Unpaginated. With 59 of 60 beautiful hand-coloured engraved plates (1 double page) by William Clark, each with accompanying text. Index. The plates are clean and, with very minor exceptions, free of foxing. First issued in Parts each plate, with a very few exceptions, contains a date (either 1825 or 1826) and publisher (most often Smith Elder & Co or Longmans & Co) at the foot. This copy is lacking one plate (Plate 37) but the quality of the engravings is some of the best ever achieved in Britain. In "Great Flower Books 1700-1900, Sacheverell Sitwell describes this as "a rare and lovely botanical work." Photographs available on request.

"We confess we do not perceive the utility of this work as a botanical publication, but we must, nevertheless, do justice to the execution of the plates by Mr. Clark, which are really beautiful specimens of art. Such talents deserve to be better employed than in drawing and engraving subjects… Read More
