Finely bound in contemporary blue/green levant goatskin with corners and marbled paper over boards; top edge gilt. A very handsome binding, though the spine has evenly toned to tan; light rubbing including some abrasion to the marbled paper over the rear board; contents clean and binding sound. Laid in is a typed letter signed by Puleston on Navy Department letterhead to Confederate Captain Samuel A'Court Ashe (1840-1938) thanking him for his reminiscences of Mahan, Ashe's lifelong friend. Additionally, Puleston asks Ashe in this letter a series of questions. Puleston writes, "I am trying very hard to get a good picture in my own mind of Mahan as a Midshipman, and I think you are the only person that can really help me."
