London, U.K.: Navarre Society Limited, 1921. No dust jacket. Hardcover. Complete two-volume set. Illustrated by W. Heath Robinson. "Doctor in Physick. Containing five books of the lives, heroick deeds and sayings of Gargantua and his sonne Pantagruel". Former owner's initials are penned on pastedowns. Boards are quite grubby and edge-worn. Spines are very faded, with some wear, bumping and rubbing to ends. Leading corners are worn and a little bent, particularly the rear leading corners of Volume II. Pages are rough-cut. Heads of page blocks are in gilt; face and feet are quite faded. Front hinge of Volume I is cracked and binding is a little loose throughout first half of volume; binding of Volume II appears sound. Pastedowns and endpapers of both volumes are quite sunned. Small label near lower inner corner of rear pastedown of Volume I. Contents are clear. AF. hardcover. Acceptable/No Dust Jacket. Illus. by Robinson, W. Heath. Used.

Rabelais, Renaissance humorist, using the name Aclofribas Nasier [an anagram of his name] published his first book, "Pantagruel," the start of the "Gargantua" series that was completed in four novels -- a chronicle of farce, peppered with broad popular humor mocking asceticism and oppressive religious and political forces. Generally clean and sound internally, early small initials margin of frontispiece and in margin of second title, corner wear.
