The cloth of this copy is quite damaged, discolored and separating from the front board to a depth of about two inches around the outside edge. The illustrated front endsheet is dampstained and the rear free endpaper tanned. There is a very slight dampstain to the reverse of the frontispiece mount; otherwise the plates and text are all fine.. Folio,. Illustrated with 12 full-page tipped-in color plates by Arthur Rackham, all but one with tissue guards, as well as a number of black-and-white drawings, many also full-page.

Hudson remarks that in this book "Rackham added forty more stories by the Brothers Grimm to the sixty which he had already illustrated, his inspiration showing no decline" (Hudson, pp. 106-8). Quarto. Original green cloth, spine and front cover lettered and decorated in gilt, illustrated endpapers, top edge gilt. Mounted colour frontispiece and 11 similar plates, black and white illustrations in the text. Neat ownership initials "H. S. E." and December 1917 prize inscription on front pastedown awarding this copy to one Joyce Tankard, with his bookplate on verso. Covers a bit rubbed at the edges. Very good.

With 13 tipped-in colour plates, including frontispiece, and black and white illustrations to the text, all by Rackham.
