Condition is GOOD+ ; covers a bit dull/toned with one small spot. Corners bumped and worn. Small hole/loss to lower front by spine. Front hinge is a touch loose, with a little separation visible at the 2nd blank, but the binding is holding quite well. Glue spots on front endpapers. Text is bright and clean. All the plates are present and excellent, bright and unmarked. One has lost its tissue guard. Chil. RGR.

Folio, full cream cloth, silhoutte border designs and titles all in full gilt. Twelve tipped-in full color plates (beautifully printed) by Thomas MacKenzie. Captioned tissue guards plus line drawings and page decorations in black throughout. Top edge gilt. Spine quite darkened and a bit worn. Cloth edges modestly sunned while cover gilt remains bright. Back cover moderately soiled. Light rippling to right front panel border. Interior fine. Printed on very heavy, hand-made paper, uncut. Profusely decorated throughout. This is MacKenzie's finest book; he did only a few titles, but this is the only one that received the full gift book treatment. Not a surprise, given the late date of this, when the gift book market was winding down after World War I. An early work by Ransome, published over a decade before Swallows and Amazons. This lavish Christmas gift book is perhaps the finest work of the illustrator Thomas Mackenzie (1887-1944). Ransome started work on this children's book in rhymed verse in the winter of 1913-14 but did not consider it finished until 20 December 1914. One day later he signed a publishing contract with Nisbet and Co. Publication was, however, delayed by the war. Ransome's bibliographer, Wayne G. Hammond, notes that "Ransome complained on 15 February 1915 that Mackenzie had 'suddenly gone off to Serbia'" but also that it was "company tradition at Nisbet's... that Ransome was frequently out of the country and impossible to contact".
