Archibald Hamilton Rutledge was an American poet and educator, the first South Carolina poet laureate from 1934 to 1973. He wrote over 50 books and many poems, usually about his hunting and life experiences in South Carolina.

One of the last of Rutledge's books to be published before his death several years later. Dr. Rutledge portrays the drama and humor of the wild colonies around his home at Hampton Plantation in McClellanville, South Carolina. His home is now open the public. Rutledge was named poet laureate of South Carolina in 1934 and he is still the most well-known.
