London: J.M. Dent & Co., 1910-1921. [Shakespeare] FINELY BOUND SET, later impressions thus. Complete in twelve volumes. Octavo (19 x 14 x 48cm). With a colour portrait frontispiece of the Bard to volume I, and occasional black and white plates and in-text wood engravings throughout by various artists. In contemporary burgundy half morocco by WHITMAN BENNETT of New York, with raised bands, gilt titles and further gilt decoration to spines, and matching cloth over boards. Top edges gilt, others trimmed, with marbled endpapers. Gently toned throughout, with heavier toning to edges. Wear to head and tail caps, and to some raised bands and joints, carefully re-coloured. An attractive set. Very good. A deluxe, illustrated version of Gollancz's classic Temple Shakespeare (1894), a pocket series which was produced with ease of use, readability, and production value most in mind. This version was first printed in 1899.

Th edition on hand-made paper is limited in five hundret copies for America, of which this is Nr. 313. - Sir Israel Gollancz, FBA (1863-1930) was a scholar of early English literature and of Shakespeare. He was Professor of English Language and Literature at King's College, London, from 1903 to 1930. He edited the "Temple" Shakespeare, a uniform edition of the complete works in pocket size volumes which was the most popular Shakespeare edition of its day. In 1916, as Honorary Secretary of the Shakespeare Tercentenary Committee, he also edited A book of homage to Shakespeare, an anthology of responses to Shakespeare from scholars, thinkers and other prominent figures from around the world. 010
