Original green cloth covered boards lettered in gilt on the spine, cloth a little rubbed and lightly marked in places but a good binding, xlviii + 375pp, bibliography, errata & corrigenda. Folio, 38 x 27cm. Some light scattered foxing to prelims and finals but the text is clean, inner hinges slightly split in a few places yet binding is firm. A very good copy of the first edition. This important index to Gould remarkably records every bird or mammal described in his works, listed by both scientific and popular names. It includes a photographic portrait of Gould as well as an intimate and touching biography which relates the story of how Sharpe and Gould became acquainted while the former was "a boy careering about the neighbourhood of Cookham in search of birds".
