New York: Robert M. McBride & Company, 1926. First Edition. Hardcover. The front hinge is cracked and has been adequately if not professionally repaired at some time with glue. Spine darkened with some wear at head. Lacks the scarce dustwrapper. Good copy and extremely difficult to find signed. A classic humorous ghost story, source of both a successful film starring Cary Grant and Oscar-nominated Roland Young as Topper as well as a television sitcom starring Leo G. Carroll. Interestingly, Stephen Sondheim wrote 11 episodes for Topper's first season. This copy is SIGNED and INSCRIBED by the author "To Doctor Sanman/To help people is the/meaning of Christ." Tuck, THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF SCIENCE FICTION AND FANTASY: "A meek and henpecked character is haunted by the ghosts of a mischievous girl and her jealous husband, who materialise under most embarrassing circumstances to torment him" (page 401).

Description:
New York: Robert M. McBride & Company, 1926. First edition. Light tanning to paste-downs, top page edges dusty, small store label affixed to rear paste-down, a nearly fine copy in a very good mildly rubbed dust jacket with shelf wear and rubbing to spine ends, several tiny tiny closed edge tears, repaired chip and tear to upper rear panel and some soiling to rear panel. A scarce book in jacket. (20295). Octavo, pp. [1-12] 1-292, jacket illustration by C.V. Farrow, original brick red cloth, front and spine stamped in gold. The first Cosmo Topper adventure. Mired in his middle class life Cosmo Topper purchases a used car, in which George and Marion Kerby were driving when they died in an accident. In visiting the spot of the crash the ghosts of the Kerby's appear and "torment" Topper in a farcical manner (from an online entry by David Langford on Thorne Smith). Basis for the 1937 film starring Cary Grant and Constance Bennett as the Kerby's and Roland Young as Topper.

Description:
New York: Robert M McBride, 1926. Second printing. INSCRIBED by the author to Roland Young, who played Cosmo Topper in the legendary 1937 screwball comedy (as well as its two sequels): "To Roland Young: The most disarming "gentleman Johnnie" that ever advanced the lines of G.B.S. [George Bernard Shaw]. From Thorne Smith." Roland Young's bookplate is opposite the inscription on the front pastedown. Also included is a first edition of the pamphleted book, "Thorne Smith: His Life and Times," which includes an interview with Thorne Smith conducted by Roland Young. Jacket is bright, with a few short closed tears and some shallow creasing at the spine ends. Not only the rarest of Thorne Smith's widely sought-after comedies, but also the best imaginable association. In a red quarter-leather clamshell box, with raised bands and gilt titles.
